A National First!

Fairtrade Foundation

On 11 February 2009, representatives from Batley and Spen were invited to the Houses of Parliament to celebrate becoming the first Fairtrade constituency in the country!

One of the representatives said, “We met our local MP, Mike Wood, and Gareth Thomas, Minister for Overseas Development. The DfID minister was keen to explore the work done in the constituency to achieve Fairtrade status. He felt the initiative was very useful in promoting and advertising Fairtrade products and that we were to be congratulated on our achievement. The means of gaining significant Muslim support in the Batley area was of particular interest. I was impressed by how keen the minister was to raise the awareness of Fairtrade within government. The minister presented the certificate to Mike Wood MP in front of the Houses of Parliament”

This very public accreditation is a good example of where even a small church can play a part in the divine call to justice. The efforts of individual churches in part of the diocese have created a much larger movement when united together in a common purpose. At first, it seemed impossible that the required criteria for a Fairtrade Zone would ever be achieved. But the huge tasks were broken down into specific, practical and manageable targets, resulting in a successful application for Fairtrade status, and public acknowledgement of the part the local churches played.
