The Wakefield Ministry Scheme (WMS) offers parishes a flexible programme to help them develop in ministry and mission. It also provides nationally approved training for candidates for Ordained Local Ministry.

This page gives details of the Basic Parish Programme of the Wakefield Ministry Scheme. For more information about Ordained Local Ministry - click here.

The Basic Programme is available as a 'Collaborative Ministry' Pathway within the diocesan provision for Learning and Training. This Pathway is open only to parishes rather than individuals. Parishes joining the Scheme will have access to:

  • A framework for developing a shared and collaborative style of ministry through the work of a parish Core Group or Ministry Team.
  • A range of teaching sessions and study courses designed to get the church exploring what it means to be Christian disciples, called to worship and prayer, outreach, pastoral care and involvement in the community - called to be the church together.
  • A vocational process to encourage individuals to come forward for specific authorised ministries, including Reader Ministry, Pastoral Ministry and Ordained Local Ministry.

The Basic Programme is built around the themes of:

  • Praying together
  • Working together
  • Exploring ministry and vocation
  • Worshipping together
  • Developing outreach
  • Developing pastoral care
  • Exploring discipleship
  • Developing community awareness
  • Approaching ethical questions
  • Approaching social issues.

It is normally a three year programme but alternative routes through it can be negotiated to suit local requirements.
