The Mothers Union is a Christian family charity working in 78 countries promoting marriage and family life. It has around 3.6 million members spread over all continents. It realises that the well being of the family cannot be separated from the welfare of wider communities and therefore undertakes groundbreaking community work.Subjects of recent concern are all forms of violence and the influence of the media on children. Other initiatives include training facilitators to provide parenting training, and projects in child contact centres and prisons. Its grass roots approach, which includes providing around 300 indigenous trainers throughout the Third World, is highly praised, not least at the United Nations. In the Wakefield Diocese there are about 2000 members and 73 branches in the Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield areas. Members meet monthly to learn more about matters concerning family life. Many assist in projects organised by The Mothers Union, and in their parishes. Membership is open to all baptised Christians who support our aims, whether male or female, married or unmarried, parent or non-parent.
